Debate Activities
Middle school students entering grades 5-9 have flocked to the Greatest Debate Bootcamp every summer, for over a decade. Campers learn, compete, have lunch together, and forge new friendships. Our unique activities: SUMO, HYDRA, Against the Herd, The Fractal, and CLASH are designed specifically for this camp to cross-train debaters. These activities equip them with the tools to excel in parliamentary debate, the format used in Southern California middle school debate. They learn, compete, share meals, and forge new friendships here

SUMO
The Ultimate 1-on-1 Debate Challenge
If this reminds you of the Japanese sport of wrestling, you’re right! But don't worry, there's no wrestling involved. Instead, SUMO at our debate camp is an intense 1-on-1 quick debate match that tests your mental agility and argumentation skills.

HYDRA
The Multi-Headed Debate Game
Inspired by the many-headed serpent of Greek mythology, HYDRA is a debate game where multiple teams argue for their chosen candidate on a special prompt. This engaging format encourages diverse argumentation and quick thinking.

Against the Herd
Challenge Everyone
For those brave enough to take on the entire camp, this voluntary challenge is perfect for building confidence and honing your debating skills. While we encourage experienced debaters to participate, anyone ready for a thrilling test of their abilities, go for it!
Meet Our Team
Justin Sweitzer, Oakwood School Debate Coach for over 15 years and 7th Grade Humanities teacher, recruits an impressive team of assistant coaches: former award-winning middle school debaters who are now members of the high school team. These mentors/students work closely with every camper, providing constant feedback. Whether the format is 1 v 1, 3 v 3, 2 v 8, or even 1 v 40, debaters receive thoughtful coaching in every match.
