Nice to meet you!
Once upon a time many years ago, there was a camp in an old church in
Atwater Village. It was named The Greatest Debate Bootcamp and
consisted of one coach (me) and six kids.
Boxes filled with paper, folders, sumo books, and bracket sheets of the
work we did that summer are treasured and still stored somewhere in my
backyard shed. It was “cozy” with just the seven of us, six hours a day, and
for the whole week!
Things have changed…
Today, I am proud to say GDB takes in 80 kids and more than a dozen
high school coaches a summer with that number increasing every year.
And last month, the first-ever Winter GDB session proved to be a wonderful
success. As I watched kids play the games and hang out at lunch, I began
to see in a new light what GDB does and why it’s so special.
Where else does this kind of a camp exist?
Where a debater is…
● asked to consistently step outside their comfort zone in public
speaking
● required to expand their methods and perspectives in order to
succeed
Where a student…
● gets the opportunity to consistently readdress challenges and failures
in a specific manner
● collaborates and competes with dozens of other kids daily using
incredibly profound or hilariously absurd topics
Where else can a student’s preconceptions be challenged in a multitude of formats?
Ideas to the public
A GDB debater also has the unique opportunity daily to display their growth and maturity while in a public setting, dining with peers and their coaches at local restaurants everyday, exercising responsibility for their actions and spending.
Small groups, huge potential
Where else will a debater have a student-to-coach ratio of 4:1?
And where, outside of The Greatest Debate Bootcamp, would you find these coaches to be of the most endearing, highly talented, completely devoted, and experienced debaters of their generation and league?
I know the answer and so do hundreds of other families and kids who have attended GDB: nowhere else.
The summer of 2023 will be the best camp yet for GDB with new games and more surprises to come.
